Description

Tor View Holiday Flats is a villa dating to the 1870s, originally constructed as a private residence and subsequently divided into holiday flats. The building is of Italianate style and is double-depth, with a rectangular main block and a north service wing. The exterior is plastered, with a hipped slate roof and stacks featuring plastered shafts and deep projecting cornices. Features include deep eaves supported by moulded paired brackets, stuccoed quoins, an eaves band, a moulded sill band, and a platband. The asymmetrical front elevation has a 2:2 window arrangement, with a service block set back to the left. The central part of the main block projects forward, with a hipped roof and left and right pilasters featuring sunk panels. A round-headed doorway leads to the front entrance, with a half-glazed door and a plain overlight. First-floor windows are also round-headed, with pilastered architraves and keyblocks. A shallow projecting stack to the right-hand bay has scratch-moulded panels. Ground floor sash windows have ovolo-moulded frames, glazed with 2 over 2 pane sashes and horizontal glazing bars. A glazed porch-cum-conservatory extends across the front, with segmental-headed lights, a dentil eaves cornice, and a gable above the replaced door. The service wing has paired 2-pane sash windows with ovolo-moulded frames. The right return showcases two canted bay windows. The rear elevation, visible from Exeter Road, retains original windows and stucco detailing. The interior was not inspected, but may contain features of architectural interest. The building is paired with the adjacent Ambrook property and represents a good example of a conventionally planned later Torquay villa located in an unspoiled suburb.
