Description
The Methodist Church, built in 1908, is located on Old Mill Road in Chelston, Torquay. This chapel is constructed from rock-faced local red sandstone with Bathstone dressings and yellow brick dressings for the hall at the rear. It features a natural slate roof and stone slates on the spire, designed in the Gothic style to contrast with the nearby parish church of St Luke across the valley.
The church's layout includes a chancel, a nave, a five-bay north aisle, and a southeast tower, with the west end hall roofed at right angles. The east end has a gabled façade with a moulded doorway that includes a tympanum carved with a trefoil containing the date, flanked by lancet windows. Above, there is a triplet of one-light traceried windows. The right side features set-back buttresses topped with a gabled pinnacle on four sides and a spinelet finial. The square tower on the left transitions to an octagonal belfry stage and has a tall pyramidal roof covered with stone slates; it includes trefoil-headed windows.
The buttressed north aisle has a lean-to roof and one-light traceried windows, while the westernmost bay is gabled at the front with a two-light window. The south elevation mirrors this design. The two-storey link block to the hall has crank-headed windows on each side. The hall's crosswing features large four-light crank-headed windows on the gabled north and south ends and one-window elevations on the west side, with a doorway to the hall located on the south side of the link block.
Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted to contain a complete set of ornate Art Nouveau glass. Chelston is a well-preserved 19th-century suburb of Torquay, characterized by detached villas and later terraces set on picturesque hilly terrain. The spire of the Methodist Church is a significant landmark in the area.
