Description
The Chelston drinking fountain and the railings enclosing the green were built in 1897, as indicated by a datestone, and were donated by Francis and Elizabeth Bigge of Hennapyn. The fountain features a granite and limestone trough, while the railings are made of cast iron. The cast-iron railings surround a small triangular green, with the drinking fountain located in a recess on the east side. The fountain consists of an octagonal granite bowl supported by a limestone stem, which has a trefoil shape in plan and includes three trefoil-headed arches. The base of the stem is also trefoil-shaped and forms a bowl intended for dogs to drink from. The fountain is supplied with water through a swan-necked lead pipe that emerges from the ground inside the railings and ends in a Celtic beast's head. The round section railings are topped with spear finials and sturdy cylindrical standards, some of which have been replaced, featuring acorn finials.
