Description
The garden walls and gate piers serving Nos 9, 11, and 13 St Matthew's Road in Chelston were built in the late 1850s or early 1860s, around the same time as the houses they accompany. Constructed from local red sandstone rubble, the walls feature stuccoed piers. The retaining wall has an irregular toothed capping and includes a tiled street sign with white lettering on a blue background. The gate piers for Nos 9 and 13 are square in shape with low pyramidal caps. The piers for No. 11 are more elaborate, featuring chamfered corners, sunk rectangular panels, and stepped caps topped with tented finials. These structures are noted for their group value.
