Description

Torre Abbey Cottage is a small detached house built around 1900, featuring Flemish bond brickwork, some timber-framing with rendered panels, and a slate roof that has half-hipped ends and pierced ridge tiles. The building is designed in a South Eastern Vernacular Revival style and has an irregular L-plan with a porch on the west side situated between two blocks.

The cottage stands two storeys high with deep eaves and a brick plinth. The first floor showcases two shallow jetties supported by stone corbels between brick cheeks. The west front is asymmetrical, with a projecting wing to the right. To the left, there is an open timber porch with a gabled roof leading into the set-back block. A small-pane French window is located at the end of the wing, flanked by glazed panels and topped with a segmental arched head. Above, in the jettied section, there is a first-floor French window that opens onto a timber balcony with a boarded balustrade pierced with roundels. The other elevations maintain a similar style, featuring segmental-headed ground-floor windows.

The interior has not been inspected but may contain interesting features. Historically, the cottage is located near the entrance of Torre Abbey and is part of a group of estate buildings associated with the Cary family, who were long-time owners of the Abbey. It was formerly used as the butler's house.
