Description
The gate piers and gates to the grounds of Torre Abbey were built around 1900, likely at the same time as three estate cottages nearby. They are made of rock-faced granite ashlar with freestone cornices, and feature cast- and wrought-iron gates. The main gateway is designed for vehicles and includes a pair of tall gates along with outer pedestrian gates; the piers are slightly set forward and the gates are curved.
The piers are square in section, with chamfered plinths, projecting bolection-moulded cornices, and pyramidal caps. The piers next to the main gateway are topped with realistic statues of swans, while the outer piers have ball finials. The main gates are elegantly designed with a nowy head shape and scrolled cresting, featuring shields that display the Cary Arms. The pedestrian gates match this style but are curved.
