Description

The Abbey Dene Hotel is a hotel that was originally built as a house in the late 19th century. It features Flemish bond brickwork, ornamental slate-hung gables, and terracotta dressings, topped with slate gabled roofs that have crested ridge tiles and brick stacks. The building is designed in the Swiss Chalet style and has a rectangular plan with the east end facing the road. The entrance is located on the south side, with a short wing extending at right angles on the north side towards the east end.

The hotel is two storeys high and has deep eaves supported by curved brackets, along with brick banding at the first-floor level. The windows are original high transomed casements. The east front is asymmetrical with a 2:1 window arrangement, featuring a one-window wing on the right. The gable is adorned with ornamental slate-hanging, and the upper part of the gable has vertical boards on shaped brackets. On the ground floor, there is a canted bay window to the left, followed by two windows with segmental arched heads—one in the main block and one in the wing. The first floor has two-light windows arranged in a 2:1 pattern.

On the left return, there is a front door located to the right of centre and a 20th-century conservatory to the left, along with one first-floor window. The rear elevation includes a verandah with a pierced timber balustrade that matches the balustrade on The Cottage at Torre Abbey. The interior has not been inspected but may still contain features of interest. Historically, this building served as the estate manager's house for the Cary family and is part of a group of similar estate cottages at the entrance to Torre Abbey.
