Description

The Cottage at Torre Abbey is a small detached house that was formerly the gardener's cottage for Torre Abbey. It dates from the late 19th century and has some additions from the late 20th century. The main elevations are made of red breccia, while the lesser elevations feature local grey limestone with a crazed finish. The house has terracotta dressings and a slate roof that is gabled at both ends, with deep eaves adorned with cusped bargeboards and heavy pendants, as well as peaked ridge tiles. There is a stack with a brick shaft and old chimney pots, making it a very late example of the Gothick style.

The exterior consists of two storeys and an attic, with all windows featuring chamfered arched heads and terracotta surrounds, glazed with tall two-pane sashes. The north elevation is asymmetrical with three windows and a gabled front to the right. The front door is recessed under a deep porch hood supported by brackets and covered with shaped slates. There are lancet windows on either side of the door, a triple lancet in the gable, and a smaller window to the left of the door, along with an archway leading to the garden at the far left. The right return has a smaller gable and a triple window. The rear (south) elevation is also gabled and features two lancet windows. The east elevation includes a doorway into a left-hand outshut, a one-light window on the ground floor, and a two-light window in the gable.

The interior has not been inspected but may retain features of interest. The Cottage is one of a group of three similar estate workers' houses located near the entrance gates to Torre Abbey.
