Description

The Lodge at Torre Abbey is a small detached house built around 1900. It features Flemish bond brickwork with some tile hanging and has a tiled roof that is half-hipped at the ends. The house is designed in a south-eastern Vernacular Revival style. The plan is approximately rectangular with entrances located on the west and north sides.

The building stands two storeys tall, with the roof sweeping down as a catslide over the north end. There is a porch in an outshut with a catslide roof on the west side. The west side has one window, and to the left is a glazed porch with a door on the right return. A segmental-headed ground-floor window to the right has small panes and thick glazing bars. The right return, facing the Abbey gates, features a shallow canted bay on the ground floor, similarly glazed. The first floor is tile hung and jetties out between brick cheeks supported by moulded stone corbels. It has a 4-light window with similar glazing on moulded timber corbels. The north end includes a half-hipped dormer in the outshut.

The garden is enclosed by grey local limestone rubble walls, which change to low walls with ashlar coping and early 20th-century railings, along with a cast-iron garden gate, towards the Abbey gateway. The interior has not been inspected but may contain interesting features. Historically, this building is part of a group near the entrance to Torre Abbey and was built as part of the estate of the Cary family, who were long-time owners of the Abbey. It was formerly the gate-keeper's house.
