Description

Springwater Cottage is a small house that was originally a pair of cottages, built around 1700 with alterations made in the 1830s. The ground floor is constructed of Flemish bond brick, while the first floor is tile-hung, topped with a peg-tile roof and featuring a brick stack.

The house is positioned roadside, facing approximately east. It was originally two adjoining 2-cell cottages, each having a principal room at the front heated by end stacks, with integral rear outshuts and central entrances leading to the stairs.

The building is two storeys high with an attic, featuring a mansard roof with sprochetted eaves and gabled ends. There are projecting end stacks, with the left-hand stack being larger and having tile-hung set-offs. The east front is symmetrical with four windows, including two first-floor 3-light casements with diamond leaded panes, and a pair of 2-light casements on the ground floor, flanked by pairs of 1-light casements on either side. The left return has a first-floor oriel window with iron casements, and there is a 20th-century porch on the right return with a hipped roof.

Inside, there have been some alterations, including the removal of the partition between the outshut and the principal room at the south end, as well as the southern staircase. The interior features exposed carpentry, with main beams and the south fireplace lintel being bead-moulded. The roof has a clasped purlin structure that has undergone considerable repair. Springwater Cottage is an attractive roadside house that holds group value with Nos 35 and 36.
