Description

TQ 54 NE HILDENBOROUGH LEIGH ROAD 1694/5/119 Numbers 34 and 36 GV II

Pair of small houses. Probably C18, some C20 alterations. Flemish bond brick to the ground floor, the first floor tile-hung. Peg tile roof; brick stacks. PLAN: Adjoining roadside cottages, facing approximately east. Probably 2-cell, each with a principal room to the front, heated from end stacks, probably with the stairs central to the range and integral rear service outshuts. Number 36 is entered on the right return, number 34 into the rear outshut. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic. Mansard roof, half-hipped at ends and extending down over the outshut as a catslide. Almost symmetrical 4-window east front, 2 first floor and 4 ground floor windows, with 2 flat-roofed attic dormers. The left hand cottage preserves what is probably its original glazing: 12-pane sashes in the outer bay with a smaller 4-pane sash towards the centre of the range. The glazing of the right hand block has been replaced in the late C20. INTERIOR: Not inspected. A 1957 photograph in the National Monument Record shows both houses with sash windows. Group value with Springwater Cottage (q.v.).
