Description

Numbers 34 and 36 on Leigh Road are a pair of small houses, likely built in the 18th century, with some alterations from the 20th century. The ground floor is constructed of Flemish bond brick, while the first floor is tile-hung. The houses feature a peg tile roof and brick stacks.

These adjoining cottages face approximately east and are probably designed as two cells, each with a main room at the front heated by end stacks. The stairs are likely located centrally, with integral rear service outshuts. Number 36 has its entrance on the right side, while number 34 is accessed from the rear outshut.

The buildings are two storeys high with an attic and have a mansard roof that is half-hipped at the ends, extending down over the outshut as a catslide. The east front is almost symmetrical, featuring four windows: two on the first floor and four on the ground floor, along with two flat-roofed attic dormers. The left cottage retains what is likely its original glazing, which includes 12-pane sashes in the outer bay and a smaller 4-pane sash towards the center. The glazing in the right cottage has been replaced in the late 20th century.

The interior has not been inspected. A photograph from 1957 in the National Monument Record shows both houses with sash windows. The buildings have group value with Springwater Cottage.
