Description
Hilden Cottages are a pair of adjoining cottages, likely built in the early 19th century. The ground floor is constructed of brick, while the first floor features framed construction with tile-hanging. The roof is covered with peg tiles and has brick stacks.
These cottages face north and have a mirror plan layout. Each cottage consists of a main parlour/kitchen at the front, heated by end stacks, with unheated service rooms in integral rear outshuts. Both cottages have a straight stair against the party wall and front doors located towards the center of the north elevation. The right-hand cottage, No 85, has been modernized, with the partition between the main room and outshut removed.
The cottages are two stories tall with an attic and feature a symmetrical three-bay front. No 83 retains its early 19th-century plank front door, while No 85 has a 20th-century front door. The windows include small pane timber casements, with three lights on the ground floor, two 2-light windows on the first floor, and two flat-roofed attic dormers with diamond leaded panes. The end stacks project and have tile-hung offsets, with the left end stack featuring a projecting bread oven.
Inside, No 85 has been modernized but still retains its original stair. No 83 is largely intact with early 19th-century joinery. The framing in No 83 is close-studded and made of slender scantling.
Overall, Hilden Cottages are small, attractive examples of vernacular architecture.
