Description

Wisteria Cottages is a pair of cottages located on Church Road in Hennock, dating from the early 19th century with later additions. The cottages have solid rendered walls and a 20th-century concrete-tiled roof, which replaced an earlier thatched roof, featuring overhanging eaves. There are two rendered chimney stacks on the ridge, one on the left gable and the other on the party wall between the cottages. The right end of the cottages appears to be built against the projecting stack of No. 3.

Each cottage has a one-room ground plan, with No. 1 being relatively unaltered and having its staircase against the rear wall. The cottages are two storeys high with a semi-basement, and there is a single-storey addition at the rear of No. 1. The front of each cottage features two windows, with the front doors located to the left of the ground-storey windows. Each door is accessed by a flight of granite steps. No. 1 retains its original plank door with a small inserted light in a bead-moulded frame, while No. 2 has a 20th-century glazed door. The windows are 2-light wooden casements with six panes per light, except for the second-storey window of No. 1, which has three panes per light. The ground-storey window of No. 1 contains old glass, while No. 2's semi-basement has a 20th-century window; No. 1 retains an original small square opening with a plank door featuring a small inserted window on wrought-iron strap hinges.

The interior of No. 2 has been significantly altered, while the interior of No. 1, visible through the windows, appears to lack notable features, although the simple staircase seems original. The cottages are included for their group value.
