Description

Quince Cottage is a house that was formerly two cottages, likely built in the late 18th century or early 19th century. It has undergone significant internal alterations in the late 20th century, along with contemporary additions at the eastern end and the rear. The ground floor features Flemish bond brickwork, while the first floor is framed construction clad with weatherboarding. The roof is covered with slate, and there are brick stacks.

The cottage faces south and was originally designed as a pair of small mirror plan two-cell cottages. Each cottage had a principal room at the front, heated by fireplaces in a central axial stack, with narrow rear service rooms and stairs located in the outer rear corners. The original entrances were reportedly on the rear (north) elevation, positioned centrally. All internal partitions have been removed, and a one-room plan extension has been added to the eastern end, reusing old materials. The rear of the cottage has also been extended.

The exterior is two storeys high, with gabled ends. The south elevation has an asymmetrical arrangement of windows, with a three-to-one ratio, where the right-hand window belongs to the 20th-century addition. There is a 20th-century plank front door located to the right of centre, accompanied by a lean-to porch featuring curly bargeboards. The first floor includes four 1- and 2-light 20th-century timber casements, and there is a 20th-century square bay window on the ground floor to the left.

The interior carpentry has been extensively renewed in the 20th century. The roof has not been inspected. Despite the alterations, Quince Cottage is part of a roadside group and is included for its group value.
