Description

Numbers 39 and 40 are a pair of houses built around 1800, forming part of a group of three. They feature Flemish bond brickwork, painted at the ground floor, and have a slate double mansard roof. The buildings are two storeys high with an attic and basement, each having one window. There is a blind light centered on the first floor. Above, a flat-roofed dormer contains a 20th-century casement window above tripartite 4:12:4-pane sash windows with mullions, although No. 39 has an inserted central casement in its first-floor window. The basement also has a tripartite sash window without bars in No. 39.

At the center of the houses are flush six-panel doors, with glazing in No. 40, set within a shared moulded architrave. This is topped by a slight hood with a moulded edge and fluted frieze, supported by three console brackets, all leading up to six stone steps. Above the ground-floor windows, there is a full-width fluted string, and a small modillion cornice at the eaves. Each house has a gable stack, and at the rear, there are dormers above 12-pane sash windows, along with small extensions. The interior has not been inspected. The properties also feature 20th-century railings on a stone curb around the basement areas. This pair was originally built as part of a unit of three with No. 41, which has a different ground floor treatment.
