Description
No. 1 Montpellier Terrace is a villa, currently used as offices, built around the 1820s. It is said to have been raised by one storey in the mid-19th century. The building has a plastered exterior with a stack featuring a rendered shaft, and the roof is concealed behind a parapet.
The villa consists of two and three storeys, with a three-storey corner block and a rear wing that reduces to two storeys at the north-east end. It features a dentil cornice below a low parapet, a first-floor platband, and a moulded cornice on the second floor, which is believed to have been the previous eaves cornice. All windows are adorned with moulded architraves and are fitted with 12- and 16-pane sash windows.
The asymmetrical four-bay elevation facing St John's Place is built into the slope of the land, which rises to the left. The right-hand bay projects forward and includes a round-headed doorway flanked by pilasters, with a moulded architrave and a vermiculated keyblock. Above the door is a timber spider's web fanlight. To the left of the doorway is one ground-floor window, and there is a segmental-headed archway on moulded brackets leading into a passage. The first floor has three 12-pane horned sash windows, while the second floor features three small-pane 19th-century sashes, with a blocked or blind window on the right side of the second floor.
The one-bay elevation facing Montpellier Terrace includes a ground-floor round-headed window with a moulded architrave and pilasters, while the first and second floor windows match those on the other elevation, all glazed with 12-pane sashes. The interior has not been inspected but may contain interesting features. The villa is situated on a prominent corner site between St John's Place and Montpellier Terrace.
