Description

Kathleen Court is a villa, built in the 1830s and altered around 1910, and currently used as a hotel. The main, double-depth block faces south, with an entrance on the east side. A service wing extends to the north.

The architectural style is characterised by a stucco exterior and slate roofs. Rendered stacks incorporate platbands. The east front, a three-bay design with a pedimented gable, has narrow, set-back bays and a blind central bay with a three-window facade. A front door is situated within an early 20th-century porch featuring Ionic columns in antis. It has six panels, a stained glass overlight, and glazed side panels. A flat-roofed bay to the right of the porch contains a tripartite sash window. The first floor features a tripartite centre window, partly reglazed with an 8 over one-pane sash, flanked by 2 over one-pane sashes. Other first-floor windows, along with ground-floor windows on the left, are glazed with 8 over one-pane sashes.

The south front is a three-bay design with an projecting cornice and parapet; the centre bay is canted. Early 19th-century 16-pane sashes are present on the first floor. Ground-floor sashes in the centre bay have been converted to French windows, alongside the addition of a three-bay bowed Ionic colonnade with a balustraded parapet. The colonnade is flanked by infilled and balustraded bays, glazed with tripartite sashes containing small panes in the upper lights. A single-storey billiard room, added in the early 20th century, extends to the left. Its projecting, pilastered bay on the south front has a hipped slate roof with cast-iron cresting and a tripartite sash window.

Interior alterations have occurred in both the early and late 20th centuries. A ground-floor room on the left of the entrance retains an original 1830s Greek Revival plaster cornice. An Edwardian mahogany staircase is also present. Kathleen Court is recognised as one of the earlier villas in Torquay.
