Barn On North East Side Of South West Farmyard At Edginswell Farmhouse

This is a threshing barn located on the north-east side of the south-west farmyard at Edginswell Farmhouse, likely dating from the late 18th century and extended in the early 19th century. The original section is constructed of cob with local red sandstone dressings, while the extension is made of local red sandstone rubble with a raised cob section under the eaves. The barn features a gabled corrugated-iron roof.

The original barn consists of six bays supported by five trusses, with a large threshing doorway on the south-west side and a smaller doorway at the rear. The south-west exterior has two large doorways with timber lintels and paired doors fitted with strap hinges. Inside, the barn is notably tall, typical of the South Hams area, with pegged 'A'-frame trusses featuring butt collars; the later trusses are made with more slender materials. The hipped end of the original roof is preserved. This barn is a good example of a South Hams threshing barn and is part of a notable group of traditional farm buildings.
