Description

This is a threshing barn located to the south-east of Roadnook Farmhouse, built in 1683 with later alterations and a 19th-century addition. The barn is constructed of red brick with gritstone foundations, dressings, and quoins. It features a stone slate roof with moulded stone copings and plain kneelers. The west end has ball finials, likely from the 20th century, at the eaves and ridge.

The barn is single storey and consists of six bays. The third bay from the east has a large threshing entrance, which includes a curved timber lintel and a segmental brick arch above it, with a 20th-century metal door. Stepped brick buttresses with gritstone copings are located on either side of this entrance. A similar doorway and buttresses can be found at the rear. The side walls are mostly blank, except for a regular pattern of cross-shaped breathers.

On the west gable, there is a centrally placed doorcase with flush quoining, a moulded architrave, and a moulded hood above it. Above this, a square stone plaque with a moulded architrave is inscribed with 'S? 1683'. The 19th-century addition on the east gable wall includes two quoined doorcases on the north side. Inside, the barn has five queen post trusses, some of which have been significantly repaired.
