Description

The Town Hall, in Hugh Town, is an 1889 building designed by J. Goodfellow. It is constructed from squared and roughly coursed granite with hammer-dressed dressings, and has a stone-coped gabled slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan with a gable facing the street. Built in a Classical style, the front features a plinth, angle quoins, and a plat band leading to a pediment. The symmetrical three-window range on the front is over two storeys. The ground floor has keyed 4-centred arches over horned 2/2-pane sashes, with a similar tripartite sash in the centre. The first floor has similar sashes set in raised architraves, with arches and blocks to the cills. The pediment includes a shield with relief lettering reading "VR/1887" and dentil brackets to antefixae. A single arch-headed window is present on the west end. The interior has been altered. The building is included on the list for its group value.
