Description

Roman Bridge Cottage is a detached house dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed of rendered or painted rubble, with some cob, and features a thatched roof. The cottage has a symmetrical three-bay front, which has been extended by two bays at the west end, possibly incorporating an earlier store or farm building. The building is oriented with its gable end facing the stream and lane.

It stands two storeys high and has small two-light wooden casements with horizontal glazing bars and wooden sills. The ground floor on the left side previously had a wide opening, which has been replaced with two casements. Centrally located on the right side is a six-panel door beneath a thatched gabled porch. The original dwelling unit has rendered gable stacks. The left gable features a single light window above the two-light casement, while the rear has a continuous added lean-to.

Inside, the cottage has low ceiling heights and includes a large open bressumer fireplace with a bread oven and a curing chamber located in the right gable. The roof is heavy with a collar and single purlin, exposing the principals. The cottage's name is derived from the medieval bridge located immediately to the west.
