Description

Preston Day Nursery is a detached house that was originally a vicarage, built in the early 19th century. The building features a smooth rendered exterior, a slate roof, and a brick chimney. It has a large square shape with a low-pitched hipped roof and deep eaves. The internal layout may have been altered, but it includes a central hall accessed from the south, with a principal staircase on the right. The house has two storeys and three widely spaced windows, which are 12-pane sashes set in plain reveals on stone sills. The central panelled door is sheltered by a 20th-century glazed porch with a tent hood. The west side of the building mirrors the front, featuring three bays with a central pair of French doors and remnants of a former glazed canopy, while the east side has four bays. The back wall has been rebuilt after the separation from the former service wing. A large chimney, with a reeded edge to the capping, is positioned towards the left on the ridge.

Inside, only part of the ground floor was inspected, revealing original features such as good six-panel doors, window shutters, and moulded cornices. The lateral staircase with quarter-landings may be a replacement. The adjacent property, No.9 St Andrew's Cottage, was formerly connected to the vicarage as a service wing and was known as St Giles' Cottage.
