Description
This is a detached cottage, likely dating to the 17th or 18th century. It is constructed of painted rubble with a thatched roof, although later wings are of painted brick with slate roofs. The cottage originally consisted of a single depth and a 2- or 3-room plan, with heated end rooms. It has two storeys and two windows, featuring 2-light casements with horizontal bars. A 3-plank door is situated under a small slate pentice hood, with solid cheeks. To the right of this door is a 3-light casement, and above the door, inset into a recess, is a small carved panel depicting a figure and children on what appears to be the remains of a stone corbel or bracket; the figures may be of medieval origin. Small brick stacks are on each gable, which are half-hipped. A small single-light window sits above a lean-to extension at the east end, with a further range directly attached to the right. The interior of the cottage has not been inspected. It is situated well above Preston Road, partially obscured by trees. The cottage was likely divided into two smaller properties at some point. The steep roof pitch and the building’s overall scale suggest an early date of construction.
