Description
Cromwell Cottage is a detached house that dates from the mid to late 16th century, with alterations made in the early 17th century and early 18th century. The cottage features rubble stone walls and a thatched roof with coped gables and brick end stacks. It has one storey and an attic.
The entrance includes a ledged door set within a 4-centred arch that has a hoodmould above it. There is a date stone above the door marked IR 1628. To the left of the door, there is a 4-light stone mullioned window with lead lights, also under a hoodmould. To the right of the door, there are one 3-light and one 4-light similar windows. In the attic, to the left of the door, there is another 4-light window without a hoodmould, which is slightly dormered. To the right of the door, there is a date stone marked 1726. Above the original wall plate, there are two timber mullioned windows with lead lights. At the rear, there is a small 20th-century single-storey lean-to extension.
Cromwell Cottage is of open-hall origin and may have been a long-house. Inside, the left ground floor room features a large open fireplace with a timber lintel and jambs. The roof at this end is constructed using jointed cruck. There is a heavy plank and muntin partition with a shouldered arched doorway between the left room and the original cross-passage. The right end room also has a large open fireplace with a timber lintel and some chamfered ceiling beams.
