Description

Nos. 39 and 40 Augusta Place are a pair of houses that were formerly known as Nos. 5 and 6 Augusta Place. They are located in a terrace with shops and date from the late 18th century or early 19th century. The buildings feature painted Flemish bond brickwork and have a slate wide-span mansard roof. They rise three storeys with an attic, each having one window. There is a flat-roofed dormer above the two-storey bow oriels, which have 8:12:8-pane sash windows; No. 39 has a four-pane dormer while No. 40's is blocked. The top floor is adorned with a dentil cornice.

The ground floors have late 20th-century shop fronts, but No. 40 retains an early four-panel door with a radial fanlight to the left, set in reveals and flanked by fluted Corinthian pilasters, although the left-hand pilaster is missing. A central ridge stack is present, with the ridge level on the left side being slightly lower than on the right. The right gable wall is plain rendered and exposed in a narrow alleyway. The interior was not inspected, and at the time of the survey, No. 40 appeared to be unused above the ground floor.
