Description
Nos. 41 and 42 Augusta Place, formerly known as Nos. 7 and 8 Augusta Place, are a pair of houses that have been converted into a hotel. They were built in the mid-19th century, possibly incorporating some late 18th-century elements, but are primarily reflective of mid-19th-century design. The exterior is rendered and features a slate roof.
The building has four storeys, an attic, and a basement, with four windows across the front. There are four glazing-bar sash dormers with ornate half-hipped gables supported by curved brackets, while the other windows are plain sash. The facade includes three canted bays that rise three storeys, each topped with dentilled cornices and panelled skirts. The cornice of the third bay extends across the full width of the front, including a sill band, and features dentils above the first-floor windows.
In the second bay, there is a sash window with a moulded architrave and a small cornice at the first and third floors, with the lower sash extending to floor level, allowing access to the portico balcony. The ground floor has smaller projecting bays with a 1:2:1 arrangement of plain sashes, and scroll brackets supporting the oriels. The central entrance features a pair of 20th-century doors beneath a bold square projecting porte-cochere, supported by slender Tuscan columns with fluted neckings and an ornate cast-iron balustrade. The first-floor oriels also have cast-iron cresting at balcony level.
There are plain bands at the first and second-floor levels, with a double band at the second floor and a plain band below the blocking course, which is topped with a coped parapet. Above the portico on a console bracket is a coloured bust of Queen Victoria, inscribed 'Jubilee 1887/1897', indicating the building's former use as the Victoria Hotel. Each end of the building features coped gables with two deep chimney stacks. The interior has not been inspected.
