Description
No. 5 Bond Street, formerly the London Hotel, is a restaurant built around 1850. The building is rendered with a slate roof and is a large square block that extends to New Street on the left.
The exterior features four storeys and four windows, all of which are sash windows. The third floor has 9-pane windows, while the second floor has 12-pane windows above two 8:12:8-pane oriel bow windows. The ground floor has a full-width display front with a fascia and cornice that also extends to New Street. On Bond Street, there are two 3-pane windows with arched heads, a pair of panelled doors with transom lights in the centre, and a door at each end, all set on one or two stone steps due to the slope of the street. The front has a plinth and high spandrel walls beneath the display windows, along with a moulded cornice, blocking-course, and a coped parapet.
At the left-hand end, the door is set back with a corner pier, and there is an approach from New Street leading to a 3-pane window that is slightly bowed. Beyond this is a 20th-century door in an arched opening. A plain band at the second floor continues across this gable end. The rear of the building has two hipped ends and features two 12-pane windows above two 16-pane sash windows. There is also a door to an escape staircase at the first floor. The building's scale reflects the mid-19th century, but its details are characteristic of the earlier part of the century. The interior has not been inspected.
