Description

Gordon House, at the end of the terrace, was originally a house and later part of the Weymouth Hotel, now offices. The building was constructed in the mid-18th century, with the Esplanade frontage redesigned in the mid-19th century. It is rendered with a slate hipped roof concealed behind a parapet. The main facade is accessed from Bond Street.

The Esplanade front has a three-storey canted oriel with plain sash windows, and a modillion cornice to the top floor. At basement level, a four-pane sash window and a door are enclosed by spearhead iron railings, with a gate at the left-hand end leading to stone basement steps. The Bond Street front has blind openings in the first two bays on each level, with a sash window containing a grille at pavement level. Remaining windows are plain sashes, square to the second floor and deeper below, set in plain reveals with rendered keystones and stone sills. A 20th-century glazed door is centrally located, approached by six steeply nosed steps with deep panelled reveals, and set within a Gibbsian surround. A modillion cornice, blocking course, and parapet are present, with an early rainwater hopper to the right.

The interior was restored in 1992 and was previously described as being close to collapse. It has been substantially restructured. The central staircase features turned balusters, square newels and treads with scrolled ends, replicating earlier detail. The Chinese trellis previously recorded is no longer in place. The original single rooms on either side of the staircase have been partially sub-divided. The basic layout and proportions of the north, Bond Street front reflect the earlier construction, although the original bow on the Esplanade front was replaced in the 19th century with the current canted version.
