Description

Augusta Place is a late 18th-century house located in a terrace on the west side of the Esplanade in Weymouth. The building features Flemish bond brickwork and has a slate double roof with an internal valley. It stands three storeys high, with an attic and basement, and has two windows. Above a three-storey canted bay, which has 6:9:6 and 8:12:8-pane sash windows, are hipped dormers. The bay also includes a modillion top cornice and plain skirts. To the left of the bay is a 9-pane sash window above a 12-pane sash window, both in plain reveals, centered with the original pair of houses, Nos 35 and 36. The basement light, aligned with the main wall, has been replaced. There is a 20th-century door with a 3-pane transom light, accessed by five stone steps supported by a quadrant arch. Plain bands are present at the first and second floors, and the original moulded cornice has been reduced to a plain band below the blocking-course, which features a coped parapet. Two deep brick stacks on the right have been raised to clear the higher adjoining property, No.37. The interior has not been inspected. The house retains original railings across the full width of the front, which return to the door and include a central run between this and No.35, as well as a gate leading to the basement steps on the right. Augusta Place was built as one of a pair with No.35 but has undergone fewer modifications than its neighbor.
