Description

6 and 7 Cliff Street are late 18th-century houses located in Whitby. They are two storeys high with attics, built of red brick in Flemish bond. The properties feature a forecourt with stone retaining walls and steps leading to the front.

Both houses consist of three bays, with the front door positioned to the left. The windows are flush framed with stone, featuring wedge lintels and simple stone cill bands. The eaves cornice has timber dentilation, and there are brick ridge stacks on the right.

No. 6, on the right, retains 6-over-6 pane hornless sash windows. Its front door, which has six fielded panels, is topped with a Gothic barred fanlight and is protected by an open pediment supported by fluted Doric pilasters. The roof is pantiled and includes a flat-topped dormer. No. 7, on the left, has 1-over-1 sash windows. The two ground floor windows have been replaced with a 19th-century canted bay that features a timber dentilated eaves cornice. Its front door also has six fielded panels and an overlight, accompanied by a similarly styled doorcase. The roof is covered with Welsh slate and has a pair of gabled dormers with scalloped barge boards.

Only the front elevation was inspected, and the interiors were not examined.
