Description
10A Cliff Street is a building located in Whitby, designed in 1888 by architect R Lennard for his own use. Originally an architect's office and antique dealers, it has since been converted into a dance studio. The structure features red brick and half-timbering, with pebble-dash and terracotta panel infill. It is topped with ornate pantile and Welsh slate Mansard roofs and has a single brick chimney.
The building is two stories high with an attic and has a three-window front. The ground floor is made of brick and has three large segment-headed windows, with the left window set lower. Each window features canted four-light oriel windows, overlights, and sidelights with small square panes, and below them are painted terracotta panels. Above the ground floor, the pebble-dash façade includes fossil decorations, and to the right, there is a projecting balcony with turned balusters that contains a canted bay window adorned with a terracotta "sunflower" panel and small pane upper lights.
On the left side, there are double loft doors with overlights and flanking upper sidelights, all featuring small panes. Above this, an ornate gable displays four lights, alternating between plain and small panes. At the right canted corner, there is a segment-headed doorway with a part-glazed door and overlight, both with small panes. Above this doorway is an oriel window with small pane upper lights and a figure head below, while the small Dutch gable above features a square terracotta plaque.
The right return of the building includes a gabled dormer with four glazing bar lights and terracotta panels, along with decorative barge boards. The roof is finished with ornate terracotta ridge tiles and finials.
