Description
Turnpike Cottage is an early 19th-century building that was originally a pair of cottages designed in the "Cottage Orne" style. It is positioned at right angles to the road and features plastered walls that are roughcast with smooth surrounds around the openings. The cottage has a thatched roof and brick stacks, and it is a single storey.
The central section of the cottage is recessed between projecting blocks at each end. The east front, which serves as the entrance, has an ornamental timber verandah along the recessed section, with the roof extending down over this area. There are two ledged doors, one located at each end of the verandah in the side walls of the projecting blocks. The west front originally had two doors in round-arched openings, but one has been converted into a window. All windows feature stone mullions and cast iron casements with ornamental glazing that includes some coloured glass.
