Description
Elm Tree Cottage is a pair of cottages that have been combined into one dwelling. It likely dates from the 18th century or earlier but was significantly rebuilt and transformed into a Cottage Orne around the 1840s. The building features red brick and decorative timber framing with stone dressings. Its roof is thatched and tiled, adorned with two decorative ridge stacks and a lateral stack.
The cottage is two storeys high and has an L-shaped plan. The south elevation includes a gabled bay on the right, showcasing applied timber framing in the form of a cruck truss with box frame infill, along with fretted barge boards. The east elevation is double fronted, featuring a central doorway topped with a large bracketed stone hood. On either side of the doorway are three-light windows set under flat arches, which have diamond-paned lights. Above, there are two similar windows located in eyebrow dormers. Inside, the left-hand room on the ground floor contains an inglenook fireplace with a fire window and a salt cupboard.
