Description
The stable block to Upwey House is a carriage house and stable dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It features Flemish brickwork with some stone dressings, lias rubble with brick dressings, and an asbestos-cement slate roof. The building has a central square block with a pyramidal roof, flanked by slightly lower hipped wings that are set back. The central section is two storeys high and has six-pane sash windows above two wide openings with flat elliptical heads made of brick voussoirs and a stone key, resting on stone imposts. These openings contain pairs of plank doors topped with matching plank tympana. The sides and back of the central block are constructed of rubble and have dressed Portland stone quoins, along with a simple wooden eaves cornice. Each wing, also in rubble, features a nine-pane sash window with a radial head set in a brick arch with a stone key and impost, and a deep stone sill. The left wing has a segmental arch with a keystone above a door, while the right wing has been widened. At the rear, there is a flight of stairs leading up to a loading door, with a two-light casement window located below the arched landing. The interior has not been inspected, and the flank walls are plain.
