Description
The gate piers, gates, and boundary walling at the entrance to Upwey House date from the late 18th century or early 19th century for the piers and mid to late 19th century for the gates. The structure features stone walls and piers, with cast-iron gates that include some wrought-iron scroll-work. The gates are set back from the road, and the walls curve in quadrants. To the left, the boundary wall continues to a gateway opposite the turning to Elwell Road, while to the right, it leads to a straight joint in the walling opposite No. 82, Church Street (which is not included in this listing). The piers are made of dressed stone, approximately 0.6 meters square, and rise to simple moulded caps topped with large ball finials, reaching a height of about 3 meters. The gates stand approximately 2.1 meters high, featuring heavy square-section members, a middle rail with scroll embellishments, and small finials on each vertical member.
