Description
The bank barn and adjoining piggery, located immediately east of Higher Penpol Cottage, date from the mid to late 19th century. They are constructed from killas rubble with granite dressings. The barn features a scantle slate hipped roof, while the piggery has a corrugated asbestos roof with a gable end. The overall layout is L-shaped, with the barn likely serving as a granary above stables, featuring opposing loading and winnowing doorways on the first floor. The structure is built into a high bank at the rear. The piggery is attached at right angles to the front of the left-hand side of the barn and includes three doorways in its right-hand front wall, along with three feeding hatches and dressed granite troughs in its left-hand rear wall. There is also a later 19th-century lean-to at the right-hand end of the barn.
The exterior of the barn is two storeys high, with a nearly symmetrical arrangement of doorways and windows on the west-south-west front, primarily towards the right-hand side. It features two doorways and two windows on both the left and right sides of the ground floor, a doorway located between the ground floor doorways leading to the first floor, and a window above the right-hand window. The barn retains old ledged doors and windows, while the piggery has some original shutters for the feeding hatches. Inside, the barn maintains its original floor and roof structures, and the piggery features original slate partitions and feeding hatches.
