Description

Higher Penpol Cottage is a small farmhouse dating from around the late 18th or early 19th century, with a 20th-century extension. The front elevation is painted stucco, while the rest of the building is a combination of painted rubble and cob. It has a scantle slate roof, which slopes lower at the rear, and rendered brick chimneys on the gable ends.

The original layout was a double-depth plan, comprising a large kitchen/living room on the left and a smaller parlour on the right, with an integral pantry behind the kitchen and a later back kitchen behind the parlour. A straight flight staircase is located on the right-hand side of the kitchen, and a high-backed settle helps divide the entrance lobby from the kitchen. The south-east facing front has two windows and a near-symmetrical design with an approximately central doorway. The front door is a 19th-century six-panel design. A wide kitchen window on the left contains a horizontally-sliding sash with 18 panes; a smaller, similar 12-pane window sits above. The windows on the right are likely original hornless sashes with 16 panes. A 20th-century lean-to porch has been added.

Inside, many original or early 19th-century features remain, including slate flagged floors in the kitchen and rear rooms, the high-backed settle facing into the kitchen, a beamed ground floor ceiling, a straight flight staircase, a plank and muntin partition between the stair and parlour, and a fireplace in the back kitchen.
