Description

The Red Lion is a public house dating from the 18th century, featuring painted cob and rubble walls. The building has wheat reed thatched roofs over its two oldest sections, with grouted scantle slate covering the rear left-hand range and part of a parallel range, while the remainder has a concrete tile roof. Brick chimneys are located over the gable ends, with the left-hand chimney positioned over a large external chimney breast.

The plan of the building is irregular, consisting of two almost parallel L-shaped single-depth houses, each with 19th-century extensions at approximately right angles behind the left-hand side. Originally, there was a narrow tapered courtyard between the two houses, which has since been built over. Each house was initially designed with two rooms and a cross or through passage between them. The front house likely contains a kitchen on the left and a parlour on the right.

The exterior is two storeys high, with a nearly symmetrical three-window front facing northwest and an approximately central doorway. There is a glazed porch from the early 20th century, featuring coloured marginal panes and consoles on its fascia. The left-hand window on the first floor is wider and may have originally been a 24-pane three-light casement. The window below it has likely been reduced in width and features a 16-pane horizontally-sliding sash from the early 19th century. The other windows are similar early 19th-century sashes set in unaltered 18th-century openings. The rear of the building shows the front of the rear house, with part of its original front wall having been rebuilt at some point, reusing early 19th-century 12-pane horizontally-sliding sashes.
