Description
An 18th-century cottage with an integral stable, now incorporated into the house. The cottage is constructed of painted cob walls over a rubble plinth, which rises higher on the left-hand side where the ground slopes upwards. It has a wheat reed thatched roof, partially covered with old corrugated black iron sheeting, and brick chimneys at each end. The plan originally comprised a two-room house with a lobby entrance between them, now reduced to a single room. Both rooms feature very large, partly blocked fireplace breasts. A doorway connects the right-hand room to what was formerly the stable. A 20th-century staircase projection is located at the rear. The exterior presents a long, unspoiled front sloping down to the right. The south front is approximately three windows wide, with a symmetrical two-window front for the house on the left and a single-window front for the former stable on the right. The central doorway has an old four-panel door, above which is a fire insurance plaque for the 'Fire and Life Insurance Institution'. A window to the left of the doorway is likely from the early 19th century or an original 12-pane casement; the remaining windows are circa late 19th century four-pane casements. Inside, original chamfered ceiling beams remain. The first floor and roof structure were not inspected, but are probably original.
