Description
West Berriow Farmhouse is a farmhouse with probable origins in the 17th century. It is constructed of painted stone rubble and features a rag slate roof with gable ends. The house has rendered stacks, with the left-hand stack projecting and a brick shaft on the end stack at the rear right. The original plan of the house is uncertain, but there is a straight joint on the front elevation to the right of center, and possibly a blocked door opening near this joint. The layout consists of two rooms and a cross passage, with the entrance located near the center. The two rooms are heated by end stacks. A circa 19th-century outshut has been added across the rear, with the kitchen located at the rear right, also heated by an end stack.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a long asymmetrical front with four windows, a straight joint, and possible blocked doors to the right of center. There is a 20th-century part-glazed door near the center, flanked by a late 19th-century eight-pane sash window to the left, which has a chamfered timber lintel with run-out stops, and a 19th-century two-light casement window to the right. The first floor features a late 19th-century eight-pane sash and a six-pane sash to the left, and a small two-light casement and a 19th-century two-light casement to the right.
Inside, there are fairly slight chamfered ceiling beams with straight cut stops, and no thick internal partitions in the earlier range. The first floor and roof structure have not been inspected.
