Description

Beara Farmhouse is a farmhouse with probable origins in the 17th century, significantly altered in the early 19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and cob, with the upper storey rendered. The roof is a bitumenized hipped slate. The building features two front lateral stacks that have been heightened in brick, with offsets; the left stack has a tapered cap.

The plan consists of two rooms with a nearly central staircase. The small room at the upper end on the right is divided axially, and there is a dairy outshut at the rear. The staircase is a 19th-century addition, and the original layout may have followed a three-room plan, as the lower left end has been demolished. The door at the left end likely originally provided access to a through-passage, with a hall to the right and an inner room beyond, both heated by the front lateral stacks.

The exterior is two storeys high with a two-window range. The windows are 20th-century, all three-light casements with six panes per light. There is a 19th-century four-panelled door located between the stacks, with one of the stones in the right-hand jamb inscribed 'Painted 1821'. A lean-to slate roof covers the porch at the left end, which has a plank door providing direct entry into the hall. A long, low range of 19th-century outbuildings extends at right angles from the left end, featuring five plank doors and a slate roof.

The interior has been much altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. Both fireplaces are concealed, and there are no visible ceiling beams. The 19th-century joinery remains mainly intact, but the roof is not accessible.
