Description
South Battens is a house, likely built in the mid-18th century. It features stone rubble construction with slate hung and rag slates on the front elevation, and a rag slate roof with gable ends. The house has brick shafts for the end stacks on both sides and additional brick shafts for lateral stacks at the rear. The original layout is unclear, as the house has been divided into two separate residences. The front section has a double depth plan, with the entrance located to the left of center. There is a smaller room on the left and a larger room on the right, both heated by end stacks. A staircase is located at the rear of the passage, leading to a small room on the rear left, which is heated by a rear lateral stack, and a larger kitchen on the rear right that shares the end stack with the front right room. To the rear left, there is a small wing, possibly a later 18th-century extension, heated by a side lateral stack.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-window front and the entrance to the left of center. There is a 19th or 20th-century gabled stone rubble porch with a plank door, flanked by the remains of a 19th-century 20-pane sash window on the left and two 16-pane sashes from the early and late 19th century on the right. The first floor has a 19th-century 20-pane sash and a 16-pane sash, with a later 19th or 20th-century 16-pane sash in the center. A lean-to outshut is present on the right side. Inside, there is a large granite lintel over the fireplace in the right-hand room, and a 19th-century staircase at the rear of the passage. The partition on the left side of the passage has been removed, and there is a stone rubble cross wall on the right side. The first floor and the wing to the rear left have not been inspected.
