Description
Battens Millhouse is a millhouse and attached outbuilding with pighouses, built in 1702 for I.T., as indicated by the datestone. The structure is made of stone rubble with granite quoins and features slate hanging with rag slates on the front above the base. It has a slate roof with hipped ends, a rendered end stack on the right, and a stone rubble end stack on the left.
The building has a two-storey, two-room layout with a cross or through passage plan, heated by the end stacks. There is likely a 20th-century outshut extension at the rear right. The front is almost symmetrical with three windows, slate hung above the base. The central entrance features a 19th-century panelled door and a porch supported by two granite piers with square bases and round shafts. The initials I.T. are carved in relief on the left-hand capital, and the date '17' '02' is carved on two faces of the right-hand capital. The porch has slate side panels, a moulded granite cornice, and a slate roof with a gable end.
Flanking the porch are two early 19th-century 24-pane sash windows, both with granite hood moulds. The first floor has three 19th-century 4 over 8-pane sashes, all with granite hood moulds. Attached to the left-hand end is a 19th-century outshut, along with a row of circa 19th-century pighouses made of stone rubble with rag slate roofs. The interior has not been inspected.
