Description
Berriowbridge Bridge is a road bridge over the River Lynher, dating from around the mid-16th century. It was repaired in 1640, as indicated by a datestone, and was widened on the upper side in 1890. The bridge is constructed from large blocks of granite moorstone and features three 4-centred arches made of dressed granite, each approximately 6½ to 7½ feet wide. The arches have hollow chamfered arch rings and rusticated granite strings. On either side, the ashlar granite cutwaters are nearly as wide as the arches and extend upwards to form two refuges at each parapet. The parapets are made of granite and stone rubble, topped with rusticated granite coping. Originally, the bridge was only 8½ feet wide, and the 1890 widening replicated the design and materials of the earlier structure. The bridge was mentioned by Norden in 1584.
