Lavethan Millhouse

Lavethan Millhouse is a millhouse dating from the early 17th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and cob with granite quoins and features a rag slate roof with gable ends. The building has a stone rubble end stack on the left and a moulded granite end stack on the right. The layout consists of two rooms and a cross or through passage, heated by the end stacks. An outshot was added to the rear in the early to mid 19th century, and a staircase was inserted in the passage.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front featuring a single window. On the left, there is a 20th-century two-light casement window, and a 20th-century porch with a 19th-century door is located within it. To the right, there is a two-light casement window from the late 19th or early 20th century. The first floor has a similar two-light casement window to the left of centre.

Inside, the right-hand room has had its ceiling beams replaced and features a 18th-century mantleshelf with a blocked fireplace. The left-hand room contains some roughly cut ceiling beams. The kitchen is located in the rear left outshot and includes a cloam oven. The roof structure has been partly replaced, likely at the same time as the outshot was added, although some earlier trusses may still be present but are not accessible.
