Description

Lavethan Mill is an early 19th-century watermill with an adjoining barn, built on the site of an earlier mill and incorporating some dressed stone from that structure. The mill is constructed of stone rubble with granite quoins, and has a slate roof with gable ends, the north-east section being higher. The plan combines the watermill on the south side with an overshot wheel, and an adjoining barn to the south-west. The mill’s south elevation has a three-storey section with meal floor, full stone floor, bin floor and high-level gallery. The barn has a two-storey elevation. A waterwheel is located on the south elevation. A chamfered granite four-centred arch with a keyblock on the north elevation is inscribed with ‘....16 WH 168 - I. May -’, and is believed to have been reused from the earlier building. The interior contains one millstone, a meal floor, a stone floor, a bin floor, and a high-level gallery. The watermill remains in full use, although the original millstones have been replaced by modern machinery. Originally known as 'Queens Mill', it was closely associated with Lavethan House. Further details are given in Maclean's Parochial and Family History of the Deanery of Trigg Minor in the County of Cornwall 1875.
