Description
Penrose Farmhouse is a house dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is constructed of stone rubble with granite dressings, which include granite quoins, a string course, window cills, and arches for windows and doorways. The front features slate hung with rag slates above the first floor. The farmhouse has stone rubble end stacks with brick shafts and a stone rubble end stack to the rear wing, which has a granite string and brick shaft.
The layout consists of two rooms with a wide through passage, and the staircase is located on the right side of the passage. The larger left room was likely the kitchen, with a service room behind it in a shallower parallel range that has a one-room plan. The smaller right room was probably the original parlour, which has a cellar below accessible from the lower ground level at the right end.
The exterior is two storeys tall with an attic and cellar, featuring an almost symmetrical three-window front. There is a moulded granite string above the ground floor and slate hanging. The original window openings have cambered granite arches and granite cills, with 16-pane sashes that were replaced in the late 20th century. The doorway to the right of centre has a late 20th-century six-panel door and a rectangular overlight in the original opening, also with a cambered stone arch. At the rear, there is a central late 20th-century stair window that replaces an early 18th-century sash with small panes, and a large gabled dormer above features a gothic window from 1985/6, which replaces a 19th-century original of similar design. A short parallel back range to the right has a moulded eaves cornice.
Inside, there is a wide hall with granite flags. The 18th-century staircase on the right side has a closed string, turned balusters, and a deep unmoulded handrail, along with a stair gate that has a ramped top rail. The room to the right features a late 17th-century plaster ceiling with a central quatrefoil motif and a moulded cornice. The left room has a large fireplace with roughly coursed granite jambs and a chamfered timber lintel. The roof structure has not been inspected. Overall, this is an especially fine house set in a picturesque location.
