Description
Castle Millford Millhouse is a millhouse dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and cob, topped with a rag slate roof that has a hipped end on the right and a gable end on the left, featuring an end stack on the left side.
The building has a two-room layout, with the entrance located slightly to the right of the center. This leads directly into the larger hall-kitchen on the left, which is heated, while a lath and plaster partition separates it from the unheated room, a dairy, on the right. To the left, the house extends with a one-room plan that likely dates from the 17th or early 18th century, also heated by a fireplace that backs onto the hall kitchen's fireplace.
The exterior is two storeys high and features a nearly symmetrical front with two windows, which are 19th-century two-light casements. There is a 19th-century plank door to the left, accompanied by a casement window, and a small dairy window to the right. The first floor has two casements, and there is a 19th-century plank door in the extension to the left, along with a small lean-to outshut on the right.
Inside, the floor joists of the main range were replaced in the 19th century, and there is a 20th-century chimney-piece. The dairy includes slate shelves, and the small extension to the left features roughly chamfered floor joists and a roughly cut timber lintel over the fireplace. This millhouse remains especially unaltered and unspoilt, situated in a picturesque position.
