Description
Fonston Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the 18th century and was extended in the 19th century. It is constructed from stone rubble and cob, with a front elevation that is slate hung and features rag slates. The roof is bitumen-coated rag slate, hipped at the left end and gabled at the right. The building has brick end and axial stacks.
The layout consists of a two-room plan, probably with a cross passage, heated by end stacks, and a larger room on the right. The farmhouse was extended in the early 19th century with a one-room plan range added to the left end, and a 20th-century extension was added to the rear.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-window front, where the earlier range is on the right. There is a 20th-century part-glazed door slightly left of centre, with a 19th-century one-light casement window to the left and a two-light casement window to the right, both featuring pointed-headed lights with pierced spandrels. Above, there are 20th-century one and two-light casements. To the left, the 19th-century extension has what is probably a 20th-century window on the ground floor and a late 19th-century or early 20th-century six-pane sash window on the first floor. The rear has a 20th-century extension. The interior has not been inspected.
