Description

Nos. 1-10 Strangways Terrace comprise a terrace of five pairs of town houses dating from the early to mid-19th century. The houses are constructed of stuccoed masonry with dry Delabole slate roofs to Nos. 7-10, replaced with asbestos slate to Nos. 5 and 6; otherwise, the roofs are hidden behind parapets. Stuccoed or rendered stacks are present. The houses have double-depth plans and are arranged over three storeys with basements. Each pair of houses has a two-window front. The original hornless sash windows retain glazing bars. Ground-floor porches, designed to link each pair of houses, provide access with pairs of doorways. The porch between Nos. 2 and 3 was heightened in the 20th century. The basement and ground floor are rendered with rusticated stucco, above a moulded first-floor sill string. The original moulded parapet cornices are visible on Nos. 4-6, while the parapets of the other houses have been altered. The open porches feature moulded entablatures supported by square columns, with moulded architraves to the doorways. These doorways contain panelled doors with overlights featuring margin panes, present on Nos. 2-10. Interior spaces, where inspected, include panelled doors within moulded architraves, panelled shutters, and moulded plaster ceiling cornices. Original wrought-iron railings with fleur-de-lis finials flank granite steps up to entrance bridges and return over granite forecourt plinths. Simpler railings with ramped handrails are present at the granite basement steps, except at No. 5. No. 9 was additionally listed on January 8, 1971.
